North Bay Lodge is a long-term residential home for independent adults living with mental health conditions or intellectual disabilities. Our residents include individuals with a range of diagnoses, such as Down syndrome, acquired brain injury, chronic depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder.
At North Bay Lodge, we provide the supervision, support, and sense of community needed for residents to thrive beyond institutional care. Our goal is to offer a safe and nurturing environment where each person can experience meaningful connection, independence, and stability within a comfortable “home away from home.”
As a medium-sized residence, we are home to 44 individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, aged between 30 and 70 years. The size of our community allows for genuine social interaction and a strong sense of belonging — something that can be difficult to find outside a supported environment.
North Bay Lodge is registered as both a Public Benefit Organisation (Reg. 930033775) and a Non-Profit Organisation (Reg. 136-358), allowing us to issue Section 18(A) tax certificates for donor contributions.
Our residents are financially supported by Grantors (family members or trustees), and in some cases, the State Disability Grant. As a self-funded organisation, monthly operational costs are covered through residential fees, while additional funding for facility improvements and special projects is raised through our dedicated Council Committee.
This elected Council — made up of Grantors and Trustees — oversees the governance, financial stability, and long-term sustainability of North Bay Lodge. Meeting every two months, they ensure our home continues to provide the highest standard of care, compliance, and community for all who live here.

North Bay Lodge began in the early 1990s as a small facility dedicated to supporting individuals with mental and intellectual disabilities. It was built on a generous piece of land donated to Golden Hours School for the Mentally Disabled by a benevolent Durban North family — a gift that laid the foundation for the caring community we are proud to continue today.
In its early years, North Bay Lodge operated under the management of Durban Coastal Mental Health as part of a network of residential facilities. By 2010, the Grantors of the founding residents came together to successfully assume control, transitioning the Lodge into a privately managed, independent home.
Through their commitment and vision, the North Bay Lodge Council oversaw the development of the modern, 40-bedroom residence that stands today. This transformation was made possible through funds raised from the sale of rooms to residents on a “life rights” ownership basis — a model that continues to sustain the Lodge’s growth and stability.
Nestled among the leafy surrounds of Uitsig Road in central Durban North, North Bay Lodge offers spacious, well-maintained interiors complemented by tranquil outdoor spaces. Residents enjoy shared amenities including a swimming pool, braai area, and open grounds for recreation, games, and picnics.
Looking ahead, we are planning to extend our facilities by an additional 20 rooms — a vision established by the original Grantors and supported in principle by Durban & Coastal Mental Health, from whom we lease the land. These future developments will allow us to welcome and care for even more residents in the years to come.
